Green Cover’s Summer Release warm-season annual blend has been a reliable choice for years, consistently yielding high-quality forage when planted and managed appropriately. This blend features a variety of annual forage species, including legumes, forbs, and grains. Thanks to years of experience and valuable user feedback, we've fine-tuned the blend for 2025, making it the most effective summer forage crop to date! Below, you’ll find specific planting instructions and guidelines. This is not just another product adorned with flashy graphics; it's a proven summer forage blend that thrives across much of the whitetail deer’s habitat. Some species in this blend are preferred by deer as soon as they germinate, while others take a bit longer to attract them. This “timed-release” approach, which combines different forage species, significantly enhances the production of quality forage, attracts deer more effectively, and helps suppress weeds compared to planting a single species.

This product is pre-inoculated with the Green Boost 2.0 Biology Package, so you can reduce your fertilizer usage. Green Boost 2.0 includes:

  • MycoGreen NPK is a dual inoculant containing ten functionally diverse mycorrhizal fungi and eight bacterial species.
  • Elevate'd Fungi is a seed applied inoculant derived from natural products designed to stimulate seed germination, increase root and biological biomass in the soil, and improve soil structure. 
  • RhizoBac X-Tend features high concentrations of multi-species nitrogen fixing rhizobia for peas, vetch, cowpeas, sunn hemp and soybeans. Additionally, free living nitrogen fixing and phosphorus solubilizing bacteria combine for a robust broad spectrum seed treatment for your cover crops. 

Healthier and more vigorous plants will lead to healthier animals and bigger antlers!

    When is the right time to plant?

    Summer Release has a minimum germination temp of 60 °F. Reference your average soil temperature to determine ideal planting time.

    Planting Instructions

    Summer Release is best seeded using a no-till drill or other seeding device at a depth of 1/4" to 3/4" pending on soil conditions. Planting too deep usually results in more problems than planting too shallow. It can also be broadcast into areas with minimal plant competition such as a new plot or one where a seedbed has recently been prepared. Light incorporation or dragging can help with seed to soil contact but don't cover seeds with more than 3/4” of soil.

    Timing

    Summer Release should be planted during the spring when the leaves on trees are almost fully formed or more precisely when the soil temperature at 2” deep at 9:00 AM is 60 degrees or warmer. There are lots of websites that report the current soil temperature daily for each county.

    Seeding Rate

    Plant 47 pounds per acre when seeding with a no-till drill or other planting implement and 60 pounds per acre when broadcasting.

    Summer release blend

    It is an amazing product and it produced very diverse variety of plants. These plants are between ground and 4’ as of today. The weeds are held at bay which is great. The amount of pollinators using this field is awesome. It is everything that you claimed it to be and once it is rolled over in the fall and reseeded it will put a lot of organic into the ground. The wildlife is enjoying it as well and that is a good thing.

    Great Mix!

    Started the release process with this mix. I did not use any fertilizer at all and my soils are average at best. Had great growth, like 4 to 5 foot of growth, and the amount of biomass it created was hard to believe. Created a great layer of soil armor when I drilled into it with the Fall Release blend and knocked a majority of it over. If the Fall release does as well I will never have bare soil again. I planted this in 3 different plots and the deer were in these plots every time I checked on them, regardless of the time of day. It held up to moderate browse pressure very well. One field had heavy browse pressure and that field ended up with a fair amount of weeds. I will try the browse release in that field next year. Overall I am very impressed with this mix.

    Love this product because
    1) my soil isn’t the best and it grew very productively without adding fertilizer
    2) to be able to no till the fall release into the summer release and visa versa is huge in my mind because I don’t have to use chemicals to kill it.
    3) I’m feeding deer and other wildlife at the same time fixing my soil profile.

    Great product even in drought

    Everyone probably experienced the extreme lack of rain this spring. I waited as long as I felt I could and planted a week out of expected rain which did come but minimal. The only food plot that grew was the Green Cover summer release blend. All the soybean plots managed about 25%germination and were devoured. I will be using Green Cover blends for my food plots from now on.

    No till drill

    Love the blend! It would be helpful if you could give which seed in the blend to calibrate ALL no-till drills too. This would be helpful info for all GC blends.
