Cool Season Soil Builder

Description

Our Cool Season Soil Builder Mix includes 11 different species designed for improving soil organic matter and controlling weeds, it can also double as a Cool Season Grazing Mix for livestock. This diverse blend of legumes, grasses, brassicas, and broadleaves all work in synergy to build soil. Legumes convert nitrogen in the atmosphere and make it available to other plants while prolific grassroots improve soil aggregation and water infiltration. Brassicas are excellent scavengers of nutrients unavailable to other plants. Broadleaves for their part offer a deep taproot to break up compaction and their flowers attract beneficial insects. This combination leaves no room for weeds to grow to keep your fields clear for your next crop. If you want to improve the quality of your soil, this mix is for you!

These seeds are non-GMO and not treated with pesticides.

This product is pre-inoculated with Elevate'd Fungi and Bolster L, to increase the biological activity in your soil.
  • Elevate'd Fungi is a seed applied inoculant derived from natural products designed to stimulate seed germination, increase root and biological biomass in the soil, and improve soil structure. This product is OMRI approved.*
  • Bolster L Inoculant contains multiple families of nitrogen-fixing rhizobia bacteria plus Azospirillum Brasiliense (free living N fixer) and two phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, Pantoea Eucalypti and Pseudomonas Baetica. This product is NOP compliant.*
*Note to Organic Customers: Please receive approval to use these inoculants prior to using this product on Certified Organic land.

    Good Multi-Purpose Cover Crop

I planted this mix during mid-April in Western Wisconsin, with the goal of weed suppression and leaving some organic matter at the end of the season. I used a Great Plains no-till and planted into fairly heavy corn residue left from the previous year. I set the drill to plant a little heavier than recommended, at about 70lb per acre. This worked to prevent nearly all weeds except for ragweed. Next time, I would consider going even double the recommended seed rate.

I planted approx. 20 acres, and harvested 15 acres. Harvesting hadn't been the original plan, but produced over 500 bushels of barley, oats, forage peas, rapeseed, and flax to be used for feed, during winter. There was quite a bit of stems and leaf matter, which was expected from this mix of plants.

Another note about seeding with a no-till, I frequently stopped and checked the seed dispersal but rarely found any seeds in the ground, other than the occasional oat or barley. Most are too small and blend in. However the seeds were evenly mixed over the whole 20 acres and all varieties came up beautifully, and when they were supposed to.

I can't give a review of the seeds as I haven't planted them yet. But, the customer service and support is outstanding.
