Overwintering Mix

Description

Our Overwintering Mix is designed to be planted in the fall and overwinter, providing ground cover and a living root throughout the cold winter months. Hairy Vetch, Fixation Balansa Clover, Winter Peas, and Winter Lentils are some of the most cold-hearty legumes that will provide organic nitrogen in the spring. Cereal Rye and Winter Barley provide a carbon source, massive root growth, and living mulch perfect for rolling or mowing in the spring. This creates a clean planting area for your cash crop to be planted in the spring. Rapeseed is a great forage if you want to graze this mix, but it also provides a great taproot for breaking compacted soils.

These seeds are non-GMO and not treated with pesticides.

This product is pre-inoculated with Elevate'd Fungi and Bolster L, to increase the biological activity in your soil.
  • Elevate'd Fungi is a seed applied inoculant derived from natural products designed to stimulate seed germination, increase root and biological biomass in the soil, and improve soil structure. This product is OMRI approved.*
  • Bolster L Inoculant contains multiple families of nitrogen-fixing rhizobia bacteria plus Azospirillum Brasiliense (free living N fixer) and two phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, Pantoea Eucalypti and Pseudomonas Baetica. This product is NOP compliant.*
*Note to Organic Customers: Please receive approval to use these inoculants prior to using this product on Certified Organic land.

    What's in the Mix

When is the right time to plant?

Overwintering Mix has a minimum germination temp of 40 °F. Reference your average soil temperature to determine ideal planting time.
Read this article for more info: When Can I Start Planting?

    Ingredients

Balansa Clover, Winter Peas, Cereal Rye, Winter Barley, Rapeseed, Hairy Vetch, Winter Lentil, Elevate'd Fungi Inoculant, and Bolster L Inoculant

    Planting Instructions

Drill seed at 3/4" to 1" depth or broadcast and lightly incorporate 4-6 weeks before first frost.

    Timing

For best results, plant 4-6 weeks before the first average frost date during the fall. Planting can continue even through the first few frosts but the mix will likely not grow much in the fall and spring growth will be only from the most winter hardy species in the mix, likely rye, barley, and vetch.

    Seeding Rate

Plant 60 pounds per acre when seeding with a no-till drill or other planting implement and 90 pounds per acre when broadcasting.

Very pleased with germination and establishment in beds of roller-crimped Buckwheat broadcast by hand.

Had to wait for some rain. Got some rain, so seeded your mix and saw 1/4 in sprouts on the seeds in three das. Fantastic. HOPE IT DOES NOT FREEZE FOR ANOTHER WEEK OR TWO.

    Great Product

The germination rate was outstanding! I have a lush green field for the winter here in Texas. I always have good results from your products. First heard about you from Travis at Lazy Dog Farms on his YouTube channel. My only complaint is the high cost of shipping, which for me is about equal to the cost of the seeds.
    Regards, Chris Vanderzant
